Important Tryout Info

Hello Players and Parents:

We will have one open-gym this week on Monday [7/25] from 10:00 - 12:00. The returning Varsity players will be expected to stay for an extra 50 minutes after the open-gym til 12:50. Next week we will be having the final camp from [August 1 - 5] (9-12). If you are interested in signing up, please do so as soon as possible because they are only accepting the first twenty girls and spaces are filling up fast.

If you are not able to make tryouts on August 8th and 9th, you need to make contact with both Coach Moe and myself so that we can make accommodations. We will not be accepting new players well into the first two weeks of practice because we have to finalize the teams. It important to let us know what your situation is as soon as possible so that we can work something out with you. Hope to see you there tomorrow, and if you have any questions feel free to contact us. Thank you,

Tryout and Season Info

Shorecrest Players and Parents:

We have been given a schedule for tryouts on August 8th and 9th, and they will take place at the Basketball Warehouse. Two waves will be created to break up the large number of girls trying out because the Basketball Warehouse has one court. The first wave will be players with the first letter of their last name [A-L] and the second wave will have players with the first letter of their last name [M-Z]. The first wave will be trying out from (12:00-2:00), and the second wave will be from (2:00-4:00). Girls should arrive on time with water bottles.

As far as the season goes, we want to give you a general idea as to what the practice schedule will look like. Practice will begin directly after tryouts on August 10th, and they will be held at the Basketball Warehouse. We will send each team an email with the specific practice times. Once school starts, the week of August 15-19 our regular practices will be from from 3:45-5:30. The practices will be approximately an hour and forty minutes, and the girls on both the JV and Varsity teams will have to share the single court each day. We will have these same practice times for the rest of the season until we are notified differently. Girls on both the JV and Varsity teams will catch the bus to the Basketball Warehouse. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Summer update

First, I want to apologize for all of the recent changes; we knew this would be a challenging season without a gym on campus, and thank you for your patience and flexibility while Coach C and I work out plans for the summer. We are not able to utilize the basketball warehouse next week until after 8:30, and we don't want to ask anyone to be out that late. So, as of now, there is no open gym next week.

I will put out another email soon when we can firm up some times and locations. Thank you, and please email me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Sarah Moebius

Summer 2011

Hope you are enjoying your summer break! I have been sending messages via email to the lists I have from last year plus those who attended the end of the school year workouts. I'm sure there are girls who I am missing, so please contact me at smoebius@shorecrest.org so I can add you to my email list.

We are hosting open gyms at the basketball warehouse each Monday from 7-9pm. There are workouts each Tue, Wed, Fri from 8-9am at Shorecrest that are open to all athletes run by coach Welborne.

There are two more volleyball camps this summer. One begins June 27th open to 5-8 grades, and the other begins Aug 1st open to 8-12 grades.

Tryouts for JV and Varsity are Aug 8 and 9, and practices begin the 10th. Let me know if you have any questions, and have a great summer!

A Tough One at Home

In the Chargers second District match-up of the season, the ladies from Out-of-Door Academy played visitor to Crisp Gym. Both Shorecrest and ODA each lost several members of their Varsity team from the 2009 season and likewise each was looking to make a strong statement in the early season effort to displace Northside or St. Stephen's (who finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the District last year).

Opening the game with serve, the Chargers played basically even for the first several points scored, finding themselves nearly deadlocked at a 6-7 game. Unfortunately, from that point forward the consistency of the visiting team proved to be too much for Shorecrest as ODA was able to pull away and win the game 25-13. Games 2 and 3 followed a very similar script- with ODA winning each (25-13, 25-18)-, though Game 3 was a much tighter fight longer into the set, as the Chargers were in position to strike back when the game was 11-10.

There were flashes of great play from the Chargers, including several blocks by middle hitters Sidney W. and Hannah S., solid attacking and serving from Chelsea K. and a number of rally driving digs by Sara W. Game ball went to Chelsea K.

This was a difficult loss for the Chargers as their District record evened at 1-1 with matches against St. Stephen's and Northside looming in the coming weeks. The team travels to Keswick for their annual tournament this Thursday-Saturday, with pool play opponents (Lakeside Christian, Bayshore Christian, and Dixie Hollins).

Difficult Return to Keswick Christian

In the Chargers lone match of this week, the team traveled to Keswick Christian. The day featured four matches (2 at the MD level and 2 at the HS level). The MD teams opened with strong performances, both of which went to three games and featured a number of great hustle plays and serves from both teams, Green and Gold, respectively.

The night cap featured the Chargers facing a team that has been a difficult foe to overcome in their home gym. When they faced off last year, the match was decided by a total of 7 points (one over the minimum) in Crisp Gym; the result as an away match was quite different and the Chargers were poised for a strong response from that last meeting.

The Keswick team came out serving extremely well and were able to keep the Chargers off balance for much of the first two games, not allowing the setters, Chelsea K. and Luz N. to find good rhythm with their movements and their hitters. Game 3 featured a much greater overall effort from the Chargers as they found better energy and put together a stronger performance, though it was not enough to overcome the balanced attack of Keswick.

Game Notes: Excellent digging from Sara W.; strong serving efforts from Nikki C., Amanda I., and Lainey M.; leading the offense was Hannah S. (5 kills on 8 attempts) and Sidney W. (who did not see many sets, but made good use of the ones she did get); defense led by two kill blocks by Hannah S.; Game Ball went to Hannah S.

New Faces, Better Energy

Squaring off against an opponent not faced for a number of years, the Shorecrest Chargers faced a tough opponent coming off of a tough battle with perennial District powerhouse, Northside Christian.

In the first match between St. Petersburg High and Shorecrest in a number of years, the final score (a loss, 1-3) did not truly reflect the high points and improvement shown by the Chargers. Though the Green Devils jumped out to an early lead in Game 1 that they were able to hold on to, the Chargers played aggressively during rallies and got consistent offense from Middle Hitters Sidney W. and Hannah S. In Game 2, the story from Game 1 carried over: SPHS served well enough to keep the Charger offense from finding a consistent rhythm in getting passes to setter, Chelsea K., which created some lapses in attacking that the Devils were able to capitalize on and take Game 2.

Far from being willing to roll over and give in to a 3-0 loss, the Chargers showed their resiliency and determination (both traits which had begun to surface during their big District win over Admiral Farragut). Falling behind early (1-5), the girls did not surrender, led by the great overall defense and court assertiveness of Senior libero, Sara W. The Chargers fought back to take a 10-6 lead that they would not let go of, winning the game 25-19.

Though the match ended in Game 4 (15-25), the point earned by Shorecrest to push she score to 15-24 was one of the single greatest points to watch in this coach's memory of volleyball matches. Spearheaded by the arrival of two new players, Erica T. and Amanda I., the Chargers truly showed their mettle and commitment to the team that they are capable of being when both girls followed touch after touch on the outskirts of the court to keep play alive; the other girls took their cue and the point was won on a great aggressive play by Sidney W. at the net.

The match ended on the following point, but this was the type of point that a team can truly build on moving forward and this is exactly what the Chargers plan to do as they prepare to face Keswick Christian this evening (JV @ 6:00pm and Varsity @ 7:00pm).

Game notes: Strong serving from Lainey M. (33% ace percentage, no errors); 4 kills for Sidney W. and Hannah S. (each with a 4-1 kill/error ratio); Game Ball to Sara W. (13 digs).
